                                                                                       MY CAR IN LEVITATION

This story takes me back to 1980, near VITTEL. My wife had decided to take over the management of a café-restaurant there. It had been agreed, not being able to dissuade her from her project, that she would manage this restaurant with the help of her sister while I would continue my activity as a literary painter. Her sister withdrew at the last minute and found herself alone.

My situation had worsened since we left our beautiful castle (read the testimony "The castle"). I found myself with a scattered clientele around this city, which forced me to travel tens of kilometres more and, in winter, it was particularly painful. In addition, in addition to having to face the snowy roads, I had to work in a barn and paint in the cold.

I deplored this life and this group of drunks hanging around the bar counter from morning to night and often until they were completely exhausted.

Christine went to bed every night after midnight.

Of course, I had to participate in the various tasks involved in running a bar, a job too heavy for one person. To this, add the wood-burning stoves that had to be regularly maintained as well as the banquets that had to be catered for and you will have a good picture of the situation.

At that time, I had a CX Break that I particularly appreciated. At that time, it was a very popular and popular car. The fact that I was able to find a used one at a good price was also a blessing (see my testimony "A New Car").

I couldn't help but talk about God in this whole miserable countryside, but I believe that the hearts of these peasants were tougher, at least, than I could have imagined.

Out of Catholicism, if we simply spoke of the Gospel, we were rejected as belonging to a sect! We could even be mocked and sung at the bar sometimes (if you know what I mean?). I don't know what it is today.

I wanted to leave this country more and more, or rather... to run away. Little by little, my heart turned to Nice where my mother lived.

I tried to convince my wife to leave this inn and leave, but she always replied: Leave if you want, I'll stay here! In fact, she was particularly fond of this life.

One evening, a terrible argument broke out between us. I then took my car and headed towards Epinal. Driving at a crazy pace, very angry, I crossed these small narrow roads that cross the woods. These roads were all bordered by ditches.

I was screaming my anger in the car while driving, when this voice that I know well tried to calm me down. I was getting more angry! Then the tone of that voice went up gravely, saying to me: You're going to have an accident, George, you're going to have an accident!

I remember answering: Good, I prefer to leave this world!

In the moment that followed, I missed a bend and the car literally flew away. I saw the front climbing in front of me and felt a terrible shock! Then, total silence. I lived a dark night like I had never known before.

I noticed that I was immobilized on the spot and that, physically, I had nothing, no injuries. I just felt music cassettes under my feet and other scattered objects. I tried to turn the ignition back on to see where I was, but nothing worked anymore.

This accident was as if I had received an electric shock and I was gradually coming to my senses. I apologized to my God (who had warned me that I would have this accident if I kept getting angry) and I wished with all my heart not to have damaged the car too much.

I opened the door and, when I didn't expect it, I fell into the void at least a meter lower.

Since it was very dark and that evening, even the moon didn't seem to want to help me, I got up to explore the place and, when I got up, I felt the car. I noticed then that the front wheel was suspended in the vacuum! I followed the bodywork to the rear and the rear wheel, too, hung in the void!

The thought of my car hanging in the air frightened me. I wasn't so afraid of the dark in general, but now I felt an icy look running all over my back.

I tried to reason with myself while talking to my God and, at the same time, I was furious with myself. I felt that God was also very angry at such actions.

As for my car, there must have been an explanation for it to be like a levitation, but at two in the morning, I thought it would be better to walk home. There were only about ten kilometers to go!

After a few minutes of walking, a truck arrived behind me. I signaled to him to stop, which he kindly did, but with a little mistrust. I told him I had had an accident earlier and he took me with him. He dropped me off at the entrance to my village.

The next morning, at the first hour, the coffee was already full. It was time for a hooch, calvados, red balloons and, incidentally, coffee.

I explained my accident to these people I knew and, like a patrol, they all decided with the same heart to come to my rescue. A tractor was also following us to tow the car. There were farmers, loggers and other customers, think about it, the owner of the bistro who needs a service! I wasn't asking for that much, but the procession followed.

Arriving after a bend, skid marks on the roadway were a good indication of a car's off-roading, but there, in front of the spectacle that was before our amazed eyes, we all remained breathless! I heard, in their jargon, the peasants exclaiming: Twenty diou d'vingt diou d'vingt diou, cré non de non, I had encor' point vu ça ! Should already be dead by now! Wrapped on the plane tree!

I translate: Do you realize how lucky this man is? This road is lined with plane trees every twenty meters and the only plane tree that has been cut off at one meter from the ground was used as a landing point for his car!

In other words, if this tree, for unknown reasons, had not been cut at one metre from the ground, the car would have been embedded in the tree. Nothing of this catastrophic scenario, but my vehicle finished its race on this trunk, all four wheels in the void. Glory be to God! That's what I'm saying!

By pulling the car with the tractor, I measured the extent of the damage. Once the car was back on its "legs", I opened the hood, tightened the battery terminals and it restarted. At first glance, my car seemed to suffer only a few material damages... apparently only! One of the people who was with me exclaimed: She licked your car! There was indeed a big crease on the roof of the car and driving was difficult because it was pulling to the left.

I therefore took the car back to my body shop, waiting for the expert's visit to take care of the repairs by the insurance company. In the meantime, he lent me a small car that made me regret the comfort of my CX. Eight days later, he gave me an appointment to hear the expert's verdict. The car had to be put on the bench because a spar was bent, the engine cradle was also bent, the engine crankcase was damaged and many other parts had to be replaced because the body had to be completely separated from the spar.

In fact, the blue rib of the vehicle did not allow this repair, which was twice this value. But the worst thing was that the insurance company immediately cancelled my contract on this vehicle.

At that time, I felt like the ruthless, but fair, verdict of the consequence of my actions.

As I had to return the loan vehicle, I felt humiliated and confused by these events and it was with sadness in my heart that I entered the garage's office to fill out the papers.

We agreed on a market value for the wreck and what the insurance would give me, since I was fully insured.

Knowing that he only had old cars, I thought I would do the garages looking for another less luxurious car and in my prices. Yet, when I was at the lowest moral level, when I was sad to cry about it, will you believe the rest? The same good man who had already provided me with my previous car told me in a most natural tone: If you like the CX, I have another one for sale in the workshop!

What do you mean, if I like the CX? I was there, devastated by the loss of my dear car, and he naturally asked me, without even looking at me, if I wanted another one!

He didn't know it, but in that unexpected moment, I was almost ready to kiss him (with joy of course)!

I was rushing into the workshop and there, on the deck, a magnificent CX station wagon much more recent and more powerful than the previous one, was waiting for me. I fell in love at first sight and immediately asked myself this question in my heart: Lord, is it for me?

We agreed with the garage on the amount and formalities and, in any case, we were already in the account. Everything is therefore established in perfect confidence. I left the same garage again, as I had done for my first CX, with another one that is superior in every respect to the previous one.

We didn't hear the sound of the engine, but it's still because the song of my praise filled the car!
