Il me répondit : Fais semblant !

                                                                             I SING LIKE A DUCK

I have very often been either the object or the witness of God's humor, which in fact I would more willingly describe as God's Love.

The memory that comes to mind first brings me back to a church in Nice, rue Boyslève. On the eve of this Sunday of worship, I spoke to God about the problem of my hoarse voice, too low for me to easily sing the Church's hymns.

Before I was 13 years old I had a high voice, I could sing any chord and I was even successful at school. Since my voice has changed, I have kept my musical ear, but I feel terribly handicapped by my too rigid vocal cords.

I confessed to God that I loved hymns but that having to sing with that voice was a torture for me.

The next day, when I arrived early for worship, I sat in a clear place and I remember perfectly well that I was in a white shirt because, being in the spring, I hadn't brought a jacket.

The service began and Pastor MUZART said that we were waiting, any minute now, for very special guests! Indeed, while some prayers were being raised, a group broke into the Church! They literally threw themselves on the seats surrounding me in two rows and, curiously enough, they all wore white shirts, identical to mine.

I understood the situation when Brother MUZART declared that the musical group from Saint-Etienne offered us the privilege of singing in the middle of us that morning. And I found myself at the centre of this orchestra, the singer with the wooden voice!

I was whispering in my neighbour's ear: I'm here by chance, I'm not one of you and, moreover, I sing like a duck! He answered me: Pretend!

Ah, but I didn't like this situation at all. I was discreetly looking to see if I could escape to the right or left to join my "world", but they were comfortable as it is not allowed! I was surrounded, blocked, stuck, ashamed, etc....

Suddenly, I remembered having told Jesus the day before that I had problems singing! Therefore, it was not necessary to look for the reason for this situation! We will say that it was "providence".

To crown it all (or me, perhaps), the group got up as one man and started singing the first choir.

At first surprised to find myself sitting, very small in the middle of them, I decided to take the risk of at least keeping up appearances and getting up. Let no one think that one of their own has been sick!

To my great surprise, part of the group sang a very high song from the beginning and, at the moment of the chorus, my neighbours alone sang with lower voices than Ivan REBROFF... After a few seconds of attentive listening to the song, I followed the rhythm very easily, especially since they were as handicapped as I was in the tone of their voice.

I very quickly understood the Lord's message... whatever our voice, we all have a place and a "way" to follow...
